The Ecologist

I was born in South Africa but I have spent the majority of my life in the UK. During my time at the University of East Anglia I was able to explore the Broads, the North Norfolk coast as well as the wonderful Breckland. My professional journey has taken me to most counties in England as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as international work.

My passion for nature began at an early age, with birdwatching really starting when I was seven years old, though the first species I knew was the hadada ibis which used to wake me up when I was very young. This interest and my photography has taken me around the globe, through six continents including Hong Kong (where I resided for several years). My fascination with birds eventually expanded to include other vertebrates such as mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. During my university years, I developed a keen interest in botany, a field that has captivated me ever since.

With a career primarily in ecological consultancy, I have extensive experience in conducting surveys for protected species, including great crested newts for which I have a survey licence, water voles, bats, otters, badgers, and reptiles. I have also conducted various bird surveys, including wintering birds, farmland birds, estuarine surveys, point surveys, and breeding bird surveys. As a knowledgeable botanist, I have conducted many plant surveys Phase 1, hedgerows, species specific and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys.

In my role as a freelance ecologist, I conduct ecological surveys and research to monitor biodiversity and assess environmental health. My work involves field studies, data analysis, and preparing detailed reports that inform conservation efforts and environmental policies. This multidisciplinary approach allows me to contribute meaningfully to the understanding and protection of wildlife and their habitats.

As a wildlife guide, freelance ecologist and wildlife photographer, I combine my passions and expertise in a comprehensive approach to nature exploration and conservation. My work as a wildlife photographer involves capturing the beauty and complexity of animals in their natural habitats, to create images that inspire and raise awareness about the importance of preserving our natural world.
